A radio competition that required girls kissing other girls was always going to draw some attention, and shit a couple of conservative organisations along the way.
About 40 girls locked lips at Christchurch's Cathedral Square yesterday afternoon in an attempt to score a trip to Melbourne to see 'I Kissed a Girl' singer Katy Perry.
Stuff.co.nz reported that most 'competitors' appeared to be teenagers or in their early 20s and couples were urged by organisers from The Edge radio station to be "as hetero or as gay as you like about it".
The Edge Canterbury brand manager Alice Duncan said the event was "more about the cheeky side".
"It's about having a risque (time) and pushing the boundaries."
As expected, the onlookers were mostly young men. Despite cries that the competition crossed the lines of decent public behaviour and sent the wrong message to young people, there were still some lighthearted fans in the midst.
"It's just kissing," said one of the men who turned up.
"It's hardly the end of civilisation. It's a bit dull really."
The radio station held the event simultaneously around the country.
