Defected’s resident dj/producer duo have finally released their long awaited debut album Voices and Visions, sending their reputation to the next level. More than just a household name of the house scene for almost a decade, this London based duo (Sam Holt and Gavin Mills – aka Copyright) have produced an assured collection of soulful house and classic song writing, along with Latin, afrobeat, disco, funk and tech influences. Outstanding vocal performances from a stellar cast of collaborators also contribute towards propelling Copyright into the super league of global house players.

It was a year in the making, however Gavin and Sam have taken the time required to perfect this debut album, absorbing influences and experimenting with new sounds, whilst still staying true their own central vision and, indeed, voices – soulful house, with a global vibe.

“I think we wanted to wait until the time was completely right,” says Gavin of Visions and Voices extended gestation period. “We were quite happy developing our sound, gaining production experience and honing our DJing”. Now it seems that these skills have been perfected. The DJ’s are constantly reminded of their past successes by the reaction they get from their fans. When they drop their original track ‘Bulo’ or their infectious dance floor anthems ‘He Is’ and ‘I Pray’ – the dance floor erupts and the music connects every time.

It’s been more than worth the wait. This album sublimely blends their trademark soulful sound with a host of other influences, it’s a reflection of their varied and universally-appealing DJ sets. “We play sounds with worldwide appeal. You can drop them from Portugal to Australia to Japan,” enthuses Sam.

But the album doesn’t only feature the boy’s collective brilliance. Longtime collaborators Shovel, Imaani and Tasita D’mour all make an appearance, blending in with the overall style well, yet still bringing something new and unique to the mix. Elsewhere, original acid and hip house pioneer K.C. Flight, new school rapping sensation Mr V and old school don, the inimitable Jazzy B, all join the party as the Copyright family pushes things forward while still remaining true to their roots.

Disc 1 contains 12 smashing Copyright originals including the perfect intro “Wizeman” with amazing vocal presence from Imaani and a great jungle-synth beat, “Free”, “I Pray”, and “He Is”, with a powerful choir in support during the chorus and is one of my fav tracks on the disc. “In da club” (Shake Sh*t up) provides more of a house/r&b mesh. Other tracks on the disc give off a distinctive tribal feel which is fantastic.

Disc 2 includes 10 Copyright remixes which have taken the world by storm. Includes remixes of Masters at Work, Cathy Brown, Lisa Millett, Annette Taylor and Mr V. Copyright remix their own “He Is”, “Bulo” and “Late at Night”, of which “He Is” is a hightlight.

Disc 3 is an In the house Bonus club mix to showcase what the guys do best. It’s a 60 minute club mix including tracks from Kings of Tomorrow, Hardsoul, Quentin Harris, Marlon D, Dj Gregory, Karizma as well as plenty of their own stuff.
