Goodnight Nurse have released their second album, "The Night"
Anyone upon first hearing the kiwi band Goodnight Nurse would be forgiven for thinking they were just another alternative new rock band. You’ve got the punky sounding lead vocalist, the standard hard and fast guitar solos scattered throughout and the album cover and insert featuring a freaky looking animal mask. But actually listening to them, you’ll get a pleasantly fresh surprise. Yes, there are signature sounds made famous by other punk or alternative bands but Goodnight Nurse bring all the old ingredients together to create a fantastic collection of completely different sounding songs.
The first three songs set the tone with Goodnight Nurse’s own tones and melodies, with sordid love stories portraying an evil ‘Serpent Queen Pt 2’ and haunting thoughts in ‘Details’. ‘Lay With Me’ reminded me completely of Blink 182’s old stuff, like a new age love song; dirty without actually being dirty and the rough vocals. The harmony of the vocals in ‘I Need This’ and ‘This Is It’ sound like Jimmy Eat World while you can’t quite pinpoint why ‘Drift Away’ sounds so familiar, you seem to be yabbering away to the words by the song’s end.
With twelve alternatively clean songs void of swearing and emo crap, you can’t go wrong
One major refreshing difference in the album when compared to other rock bands, be they emo or alternative sound, is that there is absolutely no swearing at all. You may think I’m joking “Oh sure. There’s probably a shit or something.” Nope. Not even a filler euphemistic angry word to mean the slightest most pathetic profanity you can think of. These guys have got to be the unlaziest band to write their own music ever. And surely this one fact has got to keep the mothers of New Zealand teenage alternative music lovers happy.
Their first single ‘The Night’ also the title of the album has enjoyed local success and is everything a band could ask for in a number one. It’s jumpy, dancy with the usual silent building of music before the final chorus, that even ditzy pop girls can enjoy. Before the end of the song, I can almost guarantee you will be air drumming (like playing the air guitar only with drums) as the chorus kicks in again.
Their second studio album in as many years is sure to awaken the ears of some big Yankee (or Aussie) fan base especially if they continue to support such acts as ‘One Republic’. With twelve alternatively clean songs void of swearing and emo crap, you can’t go wrong.
